Facebook just made it a lot easier for businesses to run promotions on our own pages – if you’re using an app to run promotions, that’s still fine – and now promotions can be run right on the page, for example, businesses can now;

Collect entries by having users post on the page or comment/like a page post
Collect entries by having users message the page
Use likes as votes.

However – one thing hasn’t changed; businesses cannot run promotions on personal timelines. also against the rules is tagging or encouraging people to tag themselves in content they’re not actually depicted in – that means having people tag themselves in a photo of your product for a chance to win a prize is out, having them like the photo for a chance to win is fine.

Facebook’s reasoning is fairly sound from a user point of view – it keeps promotions and offers limited to the business page environment until people engage with your promotion (that activity will show up on their timelines so their friends will see) and friend’s sharing with friends in the personal timeline environment.

This should help clean up some of the spammy tagging nonsense – I wonder why people tag me in a picture of women’s shoes? – oh! to game the system, that’s seemingly coming to a stop (we can hope)

Of course this won’t effect Facebook ads or promoted posts – it just adds a new opportunity to small business owners to easily run promotions on their Facebook page.

We will dig into this more and let you know what we uncover – stay tuned for more good news!  🙂
