Hurricane Sandy Business RecoveryWow – what a wallop.

As the East Coast continues to recover from the devastation that was Hurricane Sandy here are some tips for disaster recovery and links for disaster relief resources specifically for small business owners.

In addition, if you’re fortunate enough to not have been impacted by this so called super-strom or even storm of the century, there is no better time than now to think through some preparation for your own business with these tips or this disaster preparation checklist.

For those in the eye of the storm and working to recover here’s 5 things you will want to do first:

1)    Check to see if  your business located in an officially designated disaster zone

It may be obvious for some but you will want to double check to make sure your location is indeed covered.

2)    File a claim with your insurance first and fast

Before you can qualify for any Federal assistance you will need to tap your own insurance first.

3)    Document your losses now

After you file your claim and before you are able to receive any Federal assistance, you will need to meet with a FEMA Inspector and prove your ownership of your business. It may be weeks before you meet with the Inspector so start taking photographs and document all losses carefully now to be fully prepared for this visit.

4)    Apply for assistance

If possible – go online and register at http://www.disasterassistance.gov. Alternatively you can reach FEMA at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). Currently this line has extended hours until 10pm Eastern time 7 days a week but this will change in the coming weeks.

5)    Review other SBA resources

The Small Business Administrations provides a number of loans and other resources and it is worth reviewing the options here

Amy Rees Anderson provided a very good list of additional small business disaster relief info here as well including legal resources and even tips for post hurricane office clean up. And expertise.com offers their own comprehensive guide about natural disaster preparations for your home (and home office).
